Images are created by applying different amounts of electrical charge to the crystal and then illuminating the screen from behind with either florescent tubes or LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). This is because of the difference between the technologies. For example, if a plasma cell is off then it is un-lit, meaning better blacks, while an LCD screen is still lit from behind from it's LED or fluorescent tubes when displaying blacks. This makes the blacks 'not so black'. Even though LCD has improved blacks on the latest panels plasma still has the edge. Even at the largest sizes we've seen some great results from 52 inch LCD TVs. But the downside is motion blur caused by the pixels turning on and off which have a lag time of around 5 milliseconds or less. This is something plasma doesn't have to worry about but it's not too noticeable to warrant not considering an LCD TV.LCD TVs
